Stormy Weather, Yummy Food, and Bye Bye Phi Phi
The past couple days has brought dreadful weather. Yesterday we tried out a restaurant called Garlic 1992. This historic food spot has survived numerous tsunamis, including the 2004 Boxing Day wave, survived a restaurant fire, and Covid-19. For over 30 years it has been dedicated to serving authentic Thai food. We had Khao Soi, a mild coconut milk base chicken curry with fried crispy noodles and a Tom Kha Kai, a coconut milk base chicken broth dish. Definitely some of the better food we have had so far. In the evening we went out for a drink to experience some of the nightlife Phi Phi has to offer. We played beer pong for fun with water in the cups and no drinking consequences. To finish the night we had a go at some karaoke and had to represent England with a bit of Adele.
Unlike Krabi and Bangkok where a 20 minute downpour creates an excuse for a 7/11 visit, the rain here has not stopped. Our bioluminescent plankton tour was cancelled, we got soaking wet walking for breakfast, and Robin’s bag is wet through.
We had variations of egg on toast with accompanying sides of chicken sausage and kimchi for brekkie. The trendy cafe was packed full of fellow rain avoiders grabbing a bite to eat in exchange for some shelter. The poor kitties meowing as they zig zagged from shop overhang to the next rain cover.
After breakfast we had a soaking walk back to the hostel to grab our raincoats. Not sure why we didn’t bring them in the first place but we live and learn. We walked back into town to receive our trip refund and had a walk to the beach. People were still swimming and paddling out into the sea to try and make the most of their visit. From there we indulged in a Nutella and white chocolate crepe and a soft drink. Not wanting to go back to the hostel we found a cafe and sat, like most Brits do on a rainy day, having a cup of tea. A little shop late and back to the hostel for a movie.
For dinner we will return to the local restaurant we found on our first night. She makes the most amazing noodle broth paired with either beef or chicken. For the combined price of 140 baht for two meals it is a steal on Phi Phi island where resorts mean the median price for a meal hovers around 160 baht each!
Tomorrow we are up early to travel to Koh Phangan in preparation for the full moon party.
