Sunbathing, Failed Waterfall, Motorbike Off-roading
The sun was shining today so we promptly got out of bed and onto a sun bed. We tanned the morning away enjoying the sounds of the waves and the groans from hungover travelers (us not included). We swam, chatted, ate lunch just relaxing beachside. The sand is so fine that when you stand on it, it is rated through your toes. It kind of feels like magic sand.
We had lunch at the hostel and had just settled down to sunbathe again when a guy we met our first day approached us. He wanted to hire a motorbike for the afternoon and check out the rest of Koh Rong. We agreed to go too and so got ready to go out.
Koh Rong has one main concrete road forming a loop around the island. The roads coming off of it is the responsibility of the building at the end. We saw resorts with lovely paved roads leading off. On the other hand we also saw villages with very muddy, wet, caved in ditches for roads.
I had suggested we go to a waterfall on the island. Nothing said that it was bad or hard to get to. We came off the main road onto a dirt track made muddy from recent rain. It was bad but manageable. Before long we found ourselves on what could only be described as caved in muddy tracks. We pushed on for as long as the bikes and our driving abilities would let us. Eventually we decided to turn back and find a beach instead. It was not worth it.
On the way back we passed through a collection of 4-6 houses. Robin was walking at this point due to the roads being unmanageable with a passenger. She went to duck under some barbed wire to which a little girl screamed ‘NO’. This reminded us that Cambodia, like Laos, was bombarded heavily by explosives in the 60-70s. This made up our mind that we would definitely go back and to a beach instead!
We found a white sand beach to chill on for a few hours before driving back to the hostel. We went to a Turkish place for dinner and Robin had the best Greek salad in a while. Then to bed.
